Before taking the Extra Class course, you should have the following:

  1. This course was for current members, but it is now open to anyone.
  2. You should already hold a General Class or Advanced Class amateur radio license or equivalent.  You are welcome to listen and participate even if you do not have these qualifications, since the math and theory may help you to some extent in understanding the basic licensing questions.  However, you really should be studying at the appropriate license level.  In the United States and most other countries, you will be required to take examinations in the basic entry-level and a mid-level amateur radio license class prior to taking the highest level.  In the United States, the Extra Class is the highest level of license in the amateur radio service.
  3. If you have not already done so, please complete the operating skills 6 meter lecture series by Matt Arthur, KA0PQW.  By the time you are ready for Extra Class studies, you should have this basic knowledge of VHF operating skills.
  4. Please register for the Extra Class course by sending an e-mail to wa0tda@handiham.org and putting CHU Extra in the subject line.  That way we can send you e-mail related to the class.
  5. Have your study materials available.  If you do not already have study materials for Extra Class, you may contact Nancy at HANDIHAM headquarters: 1-866-426-3442 toll-free.
