Technician news: 08/26/2010

Welcome to the Handiham online Technician course audio lecture series. We want to help you achieve your goal of becoming an amateur radio operator. Here are the answers to some frequently asked questions.

One of the questions people have been asking me about the course is, "What will happen if I come in late to the course or if I miss a couple of weeks while I am on vacation this summer?"

The answer is that this is a self-paced course, so there is no need for you to worry about missing lectures here and there. You can just make them up when you are ready, since the audio will be posted online. We do want you to finish though, so we will be in touch by email to make sure things are going well for you in your studies.  If you are planning on attending radio camp with us, or if you need study materials, you may call Nancy at 1-763-520-0512.

For email questions, please contact me at:
wa0tda@arrl.net
.

Some of you are wondering which study book to use. The answer is simple: Use the one you want. We recommend the ARRL book "The ARRL Ham Radio License Manual - 2nd Edition", the Gordon West "Technician Class", and the ARRL's Tech Q & A With Explanations as some possible choices for you. However, whichever you choose, you must be sure you have a current copy of the question and answer pool for Technician Class. You can tell if the pool you have is current by looking at the very beginning. It should state that it becomes effective July 1, 2010 and is good to use until June 30, 2014. If you do not have this current question pool, you need to throw away your old pool and get the new one. We will help you get the new pool, so don't worry about that part. If you have an older copy of one of the books, you don't necessarily have to stop using it, but you must be sure you have the newest question pool as a supplement.

Since the lectures all take place on the Handiham website's members-only section, you will need a username and password to listen to them. If you already have your username and password, you are all set to go. If you still need a username and password, please contact Nancy at:
hamradio@couragecenter.org

or call her at:
1-763-520-0512
so that we can set up your members-only access.

What does it cost? There is no charge for Handiham members with disabilities to take our online courses. You must provide your own study materials, but we will provide the question pool and the lectures. For some of you, that may be enough. Others may wish to use a textbook as we mentioned before. All of the books I mentioned are available in audio format if you are unable to use regular print. So is the question pool, which we will be delivering in online audio.

If I am blind, what about the questions that refer to figures or pictures? You will not be responsible for any questions with reference to pictures or diagrams. Math formulas are not considered diagrams, and you will need to learn some of the most basic ones. Don't worry, we will help!

When can I expect new lectures to be posted to the website? On Fridays, generally.

What is the address of the Handiham Members-Only website education page?
http://handiham.org/members/education.htm

What does CHU stand for? CHU is "Courage Handiham University", our online school!

Where can I go if I can't get something to work on the website? Just email Pat, WA0TDA, at patt@couragecenter.org. :

and let me know about the problem.

I look forward to working on that Technician License with you! Let's have a great ham radio class.
