Handiham World Update for April 4, 2022

Following the loss of a great net control station, Doug, N6NFF, now a silent key, and our previous net manager, Diane, KK6LOE, the Handiham Radio Club Daily Net has been only running on Monday and Friday mornings. We have good news! The Handiham Radio Club leadership appointed Barry McMills, K9AMO, as the new net manager, and the net is returning to five days a week! Join us each weekday morning for friendship, to promote the Handiham Program, and to exchange ideas on the many aspects of the amateur radio hobby. We will also have trivia questions to challenge your brain and maybe even increase your knowledge of ham radio. Plus, we will be getting to know each other by call sign, name, and voice, and, at times, a smile and a laugh. The daily Handiham Net is returning! Additionally, more net controls are needed. If you are interested in being a net control station, you can send an email to us at Handiham@allina.com, and we will forward it to Barry.

Are you planning to attend Dayton Hamvention this year? It’s been a long time since the last one in 2019! The Handiham Program will have a booth again, and we are looking forward to seeing everyone there from May 20 – 22. We will have several volunteers chatting with visitors at the booth and demonstrating accessible radio equipment, so be sure to stop by and update us on all your ham radio activities.

Due to some unexpected technical issues, the only reliable way to reach the Handiham Conference right now is via Echolink or over the air on an Echolink connected repeater. Both DMR and AllStar are not working at this time. We are grateful to the volunteers who are working to get everything up and running again. Stay tuned for updates!

In just a few weeks, on April 30th, the Handiham Program will be 55 years old. It’s an exciting milestone, and Pemdy and I are planning a lot of fun activities for members to participate in throughout the year including a couple of special event station activities. You can find more information on the first special event station, running April 29 through May 1, by going to the Handiham Radio Club site at handiham.net. The second special event station will take place in August following a week-long virtual celebration of our special anniversary.

We are eleven weeks into the virtual Extra Class, and we are on the first of three weeks covering everything about antennas. It’s hard to believe that there are only five sessions left after this week. We have a great group of students, and class discussions are always interesting in Extra Class! We meet for the live virtual classes on Wednesday evenings and will cover all the material for the Extra Class license by the end of the course. Students get weekly handouts along with the questions covered in that week’s class to aid them in their studies.

The Intermediate Morse Code course is on week 7, copying at 10 words per minute. We have lots of fun in this class while practicing the art of Morse code. This course runs for 13 weeks and keeps students busy with homework and one-on-one sessions with instructors in addition to the weekly interactive live session. If you always wanted to learn Morse code, we have a basic class in the fall that starts from the very beginning–no prior knowledge required.

We hope you have a great week,

Lucinda and Pemdy
