Handiham World Update for April 27, 2023

I am excited to share that we have a new administrative assistant here at the Handiham Program! LaToya Miner joined us last week, and she has been busy with training for her new job. You can send her emails of welcome to handiham@allina.com. Please be patient as she learns all about ham radio and all the intricacies of this position!

The Handiham Program is getting ready for Dayton Hamvention. In just three weeks, we will be at the fairgrounds in Xenia, Ohio. Please plan to stop by and say hi. We will be at booth 5001 and look forward to chatting with everyone.

This year, we are returning to in-person Radio Camp, although it will look a little different from past Radio Camps. We will be in a hotel, the same one we used for the 2018 Amateur Radio and Assistive Technology Conference. Of course, we won’t be staying in the hotel all the time. We will be making several field trips during the week to operate radios and visit local attractions. Mark your calendars for September 6th through 13th, and make plans to join us for a very special week filled with hands-on ham radio activities and fun fellowship with other hams. If you haven’t yet requested an application, please send an email to handiham@allina.com to get on the list as soon as possible. Now that LaToya is here, applications will go out next week.

Jerry, W0UH, our net manager, would like to invite you to check into the Handiham Radio Club net. We have several great net control stations who also help keep the net running smoothly each day. The Handiham Radio Club sponsors daily nets at 11:00 am Central time and on Wednesdays at 7:00 pm Central time on the Handiham Conference Server. Please join us as often as you can!

The intermediate Morse code class is already on week ten. Classes include weekly interactive sessions over Zoom along with practice recordings to help students increase their speed from around five words per minute to around 13 words per minute. For this class, students already know all the letters, numbers, and prosigns and are able to copy code at 5 words per minute.

If you have already completed the intermediate level Morse code class or if you can copy around 13 words per minute, you can join us in September of 2023 for a two semester advanced Morse code class. We will be taking students from 13 to around 20 words per minute. The class will run two semesters with a long break between semesters. If you are interested in this class, please contact LaToya to be placed on the list for an application.

The new Technician Class is on week 24, which is the end of the class series. The students are busy studying for their exams now, and we look forward to hearing about their new call signs! Classes were held using the Zoom platform, and handouts and class recordings were provided each week to assist students with their studies. If you want to use the recordings and handouts to prepare for your Technician Class exam, please contact LaToya for more information.

In the fall of 2023, we will also be starting a two-semester General Class license class. If you are interested in joining us for that class, please send an email to handiham@allina.com to get on the list for an application. This class will be in the same format as the current two-semester Technician Class with interactive Zoom classes along with class recordings and handouts sent via email to students.

The Handiham Radio Club is getting radio active! We will have our next monthly meeting on May 7th at 3:00pm Central Time. Meetings take place on the first Sunday of each month at that time, so you can mark your calendars and plan to attend. The Zoom link will go out to the radio club Groups.io list. If you have not yet joined the Handiham Radio Club, all current members of the Handiham Program are eligible to join. Just send an email to handiham@allina.com to let us know you want to be put on the email list for the club. Staying on that list allows you to keep up with everything that is happening.

Handiham World Update for March 6, 2023

I want to share the following message from Pemdy:

Dear Handiham Members,

The time has come to share some big news. I have made the difficult decision to leave my role as Handiham Secretary to accept an exciting new job offer. My last day with the Handiham Program will be Thursday, March 9th.

I would like to thank you all for allowing me to feel like a part of the Handiham Program for the past 5 years! You have taught me so much about amateur radio.

Kindest Regards,

Pemdy

Pemdy has been a great asset to the Handiham Program over her years with us. Please join me in saying thank you and wishing her well in her future!
