Some HF nets to check out on the Minnesota Remotes

The YL System Net is found daily on 14.332 MHz USB.  It is a good first stop on 20 meters as you check propagation.  You will find other Handiham members checking into the YL System Net, which is – in spite of its name – not only for “YL’s” – “young ladies”.  It is actually a fellowship net and everyone is welcome.  It operates every day of the year.

MIDCARS provides travel assistance on 7.258 MHz LSB.  This is a very active frequency year-round as the net has a wide geographic footprint in the USA Midwest.

SOUTHCARS, the South Coast Amateur Radio Service, provides regular scheduled nets, traffic information, and more on 7.251 MHz and has a large VoIP presence as well. There are two websites:

PICONET is on 3.925 MHz.  It is on daily except Sundays, and you will find HF-savvy Handiham members checking in. 

Breakfast Club Net is found on 3.973 MHz every morning from 4:00 AM to 8:00 AM USA Central Time.  Anyone can check in to this friendly social net to have a cup of coffee with your ham radio buddies and if you want, you can even be a club member.  An amateur may qualify for membership in the Breakfast Club by checking into the net 10 times, not necessarily consecutive or in any particular time period.

All five nets, YL System Net, MIDCARS, SOUTHCARS, PICONET and Breakfast Club, may be heard on the Minnesota HF Remotes.

RCForb Keyboard Commands

I know that some of you will wonder if the software is blind accessible.  The answer is, yes, probably.  I am only qualifying that with a “probably” because I have not heard from any screenreader users who have tried it, and I’d like to do so before I say one way or the other.  Here are some things I did find out, though:

  • Under “Options”, you can choose “text to speech” enabled.  This will cause the frequency display to be announced and other announcements to be made as you use keyboard commands.

  • ALT-Shift-F is a simple keystroke command to read the frequency anytime.

  • ALT-Shift-M causes the mode to be read.

  • ALT-Shift-B reads the buttons.

  • ALT-Shift-D reads the dropdowns.

  • ALT-Shift-S reads the sliders.

  • ALT-Shift-A sends an “Ask to tune” request to the software chat area.

  • You can focus on the direct frequency entry with CTRL+F.  Once there, simply enter the frequency in kHz, so for example 3.925 MHz would be entered as 3925 <ENTER>.  This will be confirmed by an audio announcement.

  • The mode does not change automatically as you change frequency, so you have to use CTRL+M to gain focus on the mode selection. Hold the CTRL key down while repeatedly pressing the M key to go through all the modes.  The mode will be read aloud to you.

  • CTRL+T toggles transmit.  If you have gained focus on the TX button, you can also use the spacebar to toggle transmit as you can with EchoLink.  You can’t transmit unless you have been granted permission to do so by the station’s owner.  Once you are granted permission, you can transmit any time you use that station.

If you can see the display, you will be looking at a virtual radio with the typical buttons, knobs, and frequency display.  The best way to learn how to use the software is to learn by doing.  Connect to different radios and give the tuning a try.  It is also a good way to find out what HF propagation is like by listening from various locations.

W0EQO to be decommissioned, old software retired

Station W0EQO, which has operated from Camp Courage North since 2009, is set to go off the air in early August 2015.

The station has been in almost continuous operation from Summer 2009 though today, summer and winter, through broiling hot days and subzero cold of our bone-chilling Minnesota winters, all in an unheated and uncooled attic IT closet at the residential camp. When you think about the rig control PC running that long under such difficult conditions, you have to wonder how it didn’t just give up the ghost!

Of course there were outages, some minor when the power or internet dropped, others longer when there was a networking problem to be solved.  Most everything eventually got fixed by volunteers like Lyle, K0LR, and Bill, N0CIC.  We are so grateful for their help in keeping this resource available to our members over the years.

The station may be going off the air for now, but it will come back again with a new host computer and a better location.  We will take it off the air in early August, transporting it to the Twin Cities for rehabilitation and a new host computer.

While we are working on the station, it will be set up with new hosting software from www.remotehams.com. It will be much more reliable with new hardware and software and will no longer require Skype for the audio.  We are grateful to Stan, W4MQ, for the use of his software over the years.  Following the decommission of W0EQO, we will no longer support or offer the W4MQ software at this website.   The new stations will use the Remotehams.com RCFORB software.

I hope you enjoyed operating during the June ARRL Field Day event.  Our local club members had a great time of operating, fellowship, and food.  We even had a Friday night potluck dinner to congratulate everyone who had spent time that day setting up and to share a wonderful meal together.  After all, isn’t community one of the most important aspects of amateur radio?

No ham radio license? No radio? No problem! Listen to our net on line using your computer or tablet/smartphone at 11:00 AM Central Time daily – Everyone welcome!

Join our worldwide daily 11:00 AM USA Central Time Echolink net and a roundtable session on Sundays. If you are not available during the daytime, try our 7:00 PM USA Central Time Wednesday evening session that includes a trivia question. All licensed operators are welcome. The net is controlled but informal, and there is no need to be a Handiham member to participate. Sometimes the net control station will throw out a discussion topic to liven things up! Listen in a few times if you are shy, and then take the plunge and throw out your callsign.

Operating tip: Because so many different nodes and repeaters are connected across the world, there can be a bit more delay between transmissions than you might be used to. Be sure to allow a few seconds before keying after the net control station calls for check-ins. This allows the nodes and repeaters in the network to all get synchronized.

The Wednesday evening Echolink net is at 19:00 United States Central Standard time, which translates to +6 hours, or 01:00 GMT Thursday morning during North American Standard Time. (In the North American summer during DST, the GMT schedule is +5 hours.) Connect from any Internet-enabled computer in the world, and come out on Twin Cities repeater N0BVE on 145.450. Remember that GMT is AHEAD of Minnesota time, so to translate to GMT you need to add 5 hours in the summer and 6 hours in the winter to Minneapolis time.

On the second Sunday of March in the United States, we move to Central Daylight Time, at least in most places. That means that hours for our daily nets are adjusted accordingly, beginning with the midday Echolink net, which is on at 11:00 Minnesota time. Since the local time has shifted ahead one hour, you will now find the daily net at 11 + 5 = 16:00 GMT Monday through Saturday.

A question we get every year at this time is, “Why do you change the net times to follow Daylight Saving Time? Wouldn’t it be easier to just stick with GMT and not change the times?”

The answer is that we have tried staying with GMT in the past, but received complaints from net members who liked staying on their local time schedules. Also, we ran up against other nets using the same frequencies unless we maintained the “local” times.

HF Operations

Friday CW Net:

7.112 MHz CW, 09:00 – 12:00 ET, plus whatever time is needed to wrap up the last contact: This is the Handiham Informal slow speed CW Net. Look for Paul, W8IRT. You may e-mail Paul at w8irt@aol.com with your ideas and signal reports, or to find out about schedule changes for the CW net. Paul advises us that the net remains true to local time, which means a one hour shift when changing to or from Daylight time in the Spring and Autumn.

The PICONET operates on a frequency of 3.925 MHz, Lower Side Band:

Monday – Saturday 0900 – 1100
Monday – Friday 1600 – 1700

Everyone is welcome. You do not need to be a member, and the net is relaxed, friendly, and informal. The PICONET does have an assigned net control station and will take NTS traffic. It has a long time association with the Handihams. Handiham members can easily participate in PICONET via the remote base stations W0EQO or W0ZSW.

W4MQ software will be replaced!

Remotehams.com rig control software

W4MQ software will be replaced!

We are considering a switch to this software to operate the Handiham Remote Base HF stations, so if you are a remote base user, please pay attention.  This software offers considerable benefits over our existing software, and it is available free.  There is also no need to depend on Skype for audio.  An Android app is also available, as is a physical control device, both at a reasonable cost.  The entire system is free to use via PC.  A benefit for those who host stations (like us) is that the administration of users is more straightforward and consistent – and much less time consuming.  The Remotehams.com website also has an active user forum that can answer questions, which is a good way to avoid lots of tech support.  We would like to sunset the existing station software in the near future to help make the user experience better and to streamline station management.  Please, if you are a screenreader user and can help, consider trying the RCFORB software from Remotehams.com and letting us know what you think.  Here is a synopsis of my experience so far controlling the WA0TDA IC-7200 via Remotehams:

The Remotehams.com RCFORB client is in use at the WA0TDA HF remote base.  We think that this client is screenreader accessible and would like to hear feedback from blind users. So far I have been delighted with this method of controlling remote base HF radios around the world.  The software does speak the frequency readout and control settings for blind users, a feature available in the settings.  The nifty thing is that once you set up your preferences in the settings, it applies across all of the radios available around the world. For example, if I want to ask my IC-7200 what frequency it is on, all I have to do is the keystroke combo ALT-SHIFT-F.  Later that day I decide to listen on a Flex radio in Alabama.  I use the same keystroke to ask the Flex to tell me the frequency.  This is really nice because once I learn the RCFORB software, the commands are pretty much universal across radios, subject to the radio’s features.  Remember that the radio does not need to have a special speech chip installed because the voice frequency announcements are done in the RCFORB software, not the radio’s hardware. 

The procedure for getting the RCFORB software set up is a bit different than what you are used to with remote base operation.   Your first step is to go to the website Remotehams.com and read about the system, which provides access to many stations around the world as a volunteer effort.  The RCFORB software is free and works on Windows computers.  You can support the project with a donation if you wish.  You should set up a free account.  Uploading a copy of your license is highly recommended if you expect to request transmit privileges on any of the remotes. 

The Remotehams system has several key advantages over our existing W4MQ software:

  1. It appears to be more blind accessible.
  2. It is under current development.
  3. It supports physical hardware devices on the client side, like K3 transceivers and a neat little hardware box into which you can plug a microphone and key, though it can also be operated from a computer or Windows tablet without these extra devices.
  4. There is a great Android app that allows you to control radios from your smartphone.  It’s under $10 and works well for me, though I have not tested it with the Android screenreader.
  5. You don’t need a third-party audio application like Skype since it has its own built in audio.
  6. Multiple users can listen at the same time without resorting to Echolink.  The RCFORB client allows for a number of listeners with one control op at a time.
  7. From an administration standpoint, the host software for this system is much easier to manage.  If someone wants to use my station, all I need to do is check my list for transmit requests and check the uploaded licenses for verification.  I can then add the user to the list of those who have transmit permission.  Although I did have to open several ports on my router to the host computer, this is not necessary for the actual users of the station, so the client software is very easy to set up.  No fiddling with your router’s ports!
  8. Finally, once you set up the RCFORB software there is access to many stations.  You don’t have to worry about setting a special IP address for each station as you do with the W4MQ software.  This makes it much easier to use many different stations, a definite advantage as band conditions change from one geographic area to another.

On the hosting side, those of us who set up the stations for others are usually already very busy with our own projects, our jobs and families, and everything else that needs doing around the house.  Maintenance of W0ZSW and W0EQO as it is now with the existing software is really, really time-consuming.  There is a lot that needs to be done by the system administrators.  Nothing is automated and each host computer needs separate maintenance, including for simple things like requested password changes.  Software crashes are getting more common.  It is time for a reliable, updated rig control system.  That is why we need to get your feedback!

W0ZSW & W0EQO online for week of June 22 2015

Both Handiham Club remote base stations W0ZSW & W0EQO are online. Both will be using the W4MQ software with Skype for the audio. (Some short-term maintenance outages are expected.)

Remember that W0ZSW does not have voice frequency confirmation or SWR and power out metering while the IC-7200 is in place.  The TS-480HX is out for service.  Only Skype audio is available with W0ZSW.  IRB Sound will not work.  However, you will find that the station does work well and we encourage you to give it a try.  Just be sure you use Skype for the audio.

W0EQO does have voice frequency readout and is working normally.
